Can You Get Dentures the Same Day Teeth Are Removed?

If your denture is planned and made before your extraction appointment, it can often be placed as soon as your teeth are removed.

This is called an immediate denture. It lets you leave the appointment with teeth rather than waiting for your gums to heal first. The denture is removable, and because your mouth changes during healing, it will usually need some adjustment along the way.

It is different from getting fixed teeth on implants in one day, which involves implant surgery and a temporary restoration attached to the implants.

How Do Same-Day Dentures Work?

The denture is made before your teeth are removed.

At the planning appointment, your dentist evaluates your teeth, gums, bite, and the shape of your mouth. Impressions or digital scans may be taken so the denture can be prepared ahead of time.

Then, on the day of your extractions, the denture is placed over the gums.

Because it is made before your mouth has healed, the fit will change. Swelling goes down, the gums reshape, and areas that felt secure at first can become looser. That is why adjustments are a normal part of wearing an immediate denture.

Are Immediate Dentures Removable or Fixed?

Immediate dentures are removable. They sit over your gums while the extraction sites heal and can be taken out for cleaning according to your dentist’s instructions.

Fixed same-day teeth are a different treatment. They are supported by dental implants rather than resting directly on the gums.

Which direction makes sense depends on your mouth, your priorities, and what you ultimately want from your teeth.

What Happens Before Your Extraction Appointment?

Most of the planning happens before the teeth are removed.

Your dentist needs to decide which teeth are coming out, how your bite fits together, and what shape the new denture should have. The denture is then prepared in advance so it is ready for the extraction appointment.

If several teeth are being removed, the same planning also covers oral surgery before dentures, including what needs to happen before, during, and after the extractions.

That preparation matters because a true immediate denture is made ahead of time. It is not something that can be planned only after the teeth have already been removed.

What Will a New Immediate Denture Feel Like?

It will probably feel unfamiliar at first.

Your mouth is healing while you are also learning to eat, speak, and function with a new appliance. The denture may feel bulky, and certain areas can become sore where it presses against the gums.

As swelling decreases, the fit can change too. A denture that felt snug at first may gradually become looser.

That does not necessarily mean anything has gone wrong. Your mouth is changing underneath the denture, so follow-up visits give your dentist a chance to adjust the fit and address pressure points as they appear.

Avoid trying to file or reshape the denture yourself. Even a small change can affect how it sits against healing tissue.

Will My Same-Day Denture Need to Be Relined or Replaced?

It may.

Immediate dentures are made for the shape of your mouth before the extractions. Once the teeth are removed, the gums and underlying bone begin to change.

As healing continues, your dentist may recommend adjusting or relining the denture so it fits the new shape of your gums more closely. In some cases, a new denture may eventually give you a better long-term fit.

You may also decide that you want more stability than a conventional removable denture can provide. Depending on the denture and your anatomy, it may be possible to adapt an existing denture so it attaches to implants after healing.

What Should You Expect During the First Few Days?

Give yourself some time to adjust.

You are recovering from extractions and getting used to a new denture at the same time, so eating and speaking may feel different at first.

Before your appointment, ask your dentist what they want you to do with the denture during the first days, how to clean it, when to return for adjustments, and what symptoms should prompt a call.

Those instructions can vary depending on your extractions and how your mouth is healing, so your own treatment plan matters more than a generic recovery schedule.

Can You Add Implants to a Denture Later?

Sometimes.

If you like the idea of a removable denture but want it to feel more secure, implants may be added after the mouth has healed. The denture can then attach to the implants instead of relying only on the gums for support.

This can be especially helpful with a lower denture, where movement tends to be more noticeable. For someone mainly struggling with a lower plate that shifts during eating or speaking, using implants to stabilize the lower denture may be worth discussing.

There are also several ways implants can support dentures, from removable designs that snap into place to fixed restorations. The right implant-supported denture option depends on your bone, current denture, budget, and how removable or fixed you want your teeth to be.

What Should Be Included in Your Treatment Estimate?

Ask what is included from the beginning.

The total cost may involve more than the denture itself, depending on your treatment plan. Your estimate may include:

  • examination and imaging
  • extractions
  • the immediate denture
  • follow-up adjustments
  • a future reline
  • a replacement denture after healing
  • implant treatment if you choose it later

Not everyone needs every step. A clear estimate helps you understand what you are paying for now and what could become an additional cost later.

Is a Same-Day Denture Right for You?

If several teeth need to be removed and you do not want to spend the healing period without visible teeth, an immediate denture may be a practical option.

For some people, it becomes their long-term removable denture. Others use it while healing and later move to a more secure implant-supported option.

The important part is planning the transition before your teeth are removed. If you have extractions coming up, schedule an evaluation early enough to find out whether an immediate denture can be prepared for that appointment and what your options may look like after healing.
